Cocoon Identication Please - Callosamia promethea
Lafayette, Tippecanoe County, Indiana, USA
April 21, 2009
Size: 1.75 in by 0.5 in
It sure looks like a Promethea silk moth cocoon, but the size is a little small for what I would expect. The bulk of it is about 1.75 inches long, but the total length, including the connecting silk, is about 3 inches long. Looked for silk moth cocoons all winter and got skunked, and found this guy by total accident while mushroom hunting. Figures. Found on a small tree without leaves yet. I couldn't identify the tree. Cocoon is papery. Thanks for any help you all may have!

Promethea it is
The size is just right.
