Southern Fire Ant - Solenopsis xyloni - female

Southern Fire Ant - Solenopsis xyloni - Female
Jefferson Parish, Louisiana, USA
April 19, 2009
Size: 0.5cm
On this view you can (vaguely) make out the three prominent teeth on the left mandible, in constrast to the Red Imported Fire Ants that should have four. A much smaller tooth was present proximally, but it was difficult to photograph the mandible in such a way that it showed up well… given that the guy who knows how to do this right is out for the week.
