Hanging fly, Amador county - Bittacus chlorostigma Plymouth, Amador County, California, USA April 19, 2009 Size: 1 1/2" body, 3-4" legspan
Hanging fly found in Amador county on the Cosumnes river 5 miles outside of Plymouth. These came out in droves along with crane flies and other dusk flying insects at around 6:00PM. It was warm at around 80 degrees and had been sunny all day but the sun had set over the adjacent hill. Yellow head, thorax, and first leg segment, brown abdomen and all other leg segments. Covered in small black spines. Single terminal claw on each foot.
