Milkweed Mimic Assassin Bug - Zelus longipes

Milkweed Mimic Assassin Bug - Zelus longipes
Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, USA
January 14, 2004
This photo was taken at the Frenchman's Forest Natural Area. These are also known as "Milkweed Assassin Bugs", because they mimic the Milkweed Bug.

Zelus longipes--plus, a printed illustration...
Neat photo. Looks like Zelus longipes, see
floridanature.org page

Very cool aposematic colors!

Incidentally, what looks like this species is illustrated on page 61 of Deyrup's, Florida's Fabulous Insects (World Publications, 2000). Deyrup does not give scientific names in that book, unfortunately.

Thanks for the wonderful photo.

Florida's Fabulous
You are right, no scientific names (which is a bummer). These Assassins are pretty common down where I was. I saw them in various stages of growth on a variety of pants while on my different excursions.
