Their majesties - queen ants emerge, with a "king"? - Camponotus - Female
Chamblee, DeKalb County, Georgia, USA
April 23, 2009
Size: 1 inch
I was amazed to find some winged insects that looked like ants with wings. I would appreciate an identification, thank you!

My mind clicked to the events of spring ... yep, time for "baby making". The big ones were coming from a point source which I was able to trace back ...

C. americanus
These are indeed Camponotus americanus.

Moving to genus page for now...

Yeah I agree
I was confused by the queens thorax. (on the forum) The workers look like C. americanus.

Camponotus americanus I think
Let's wait for a second opinion because I'm going on size and color for my ID and it can take a bit more. C. americanus can also be orange but in the southern part of their range they occur as partly black too. They also nest underground but so do a few other Camponotus.

What time of day did you see them flying?

Observation from last year

That is correct
The hairs all over the abdomen to the one linked there and the full black (and sometimes very tiny areas of dark red/brown on the thorax) are what make that Camponotus pennsylvanicus.

Flight times
I observed the flying at 4:17PM and continued to observe and image for about an hour. It is wonderful to see what is in print first hand!
