Feeding on cultivated
Clethra, this beetle was very fidgety, moving very rapidly from one flower cluster to another. This gives an August date for the guide. As the Brimleys
(1) noted 70 years ago, this species occurs from June to August in North Carolina. Of course, Phil Harpootlian has given similar dates for the species in South Carolina much more recently.

Note the pygidium (rear of abdomen behind elytra). It slopes down at a right angle from the elytra. I'm guessing this indicates a male, looking at the photo below of a male and a female:
