Fly - Holcocephala

Fly - Holcocephala
Powhatan County, Virginia, USA
August 4, 2005
Can anyone ID this? - Thanks

My guess is Holcocephela fusc
My guess is Holcocephela fusca. This genus is really big-eyed, and they are small. Fusca has dark wings too.

right on!
I think Paul's got it. Compare this image to those on Herschel Raney's website:

Asilidae: Ommatius?
It's a Robber fly, might be Ommatius, they are supposed to have fine vanes on antennae--perhaps visible in your photo.
