Mosquito - Psorophora ferox

Mosquito - Psorophora ferox
Harvard, Worcester County, Massachusetts, USA
September 3, 2004

Looks like Psorophora ferox.
Looks like Psorophora ferox. The white booties on the hind tarsomeres are distinctive. That and the "metallic-puplish iridescence" of the leg scales. A similar species, Ps. mathesoni, has white on the hind tarsomeres, except the 5th, which is dark.

...
Sorry. The similar species is Psorophora mexicana, not Ps. mathesoni.

Psorophora ferox
Sean, thanks for the ID and the info on how you distinguished it from similar species.
