Two-spotted Tree Cricket nymph
The 1 cm measurement must have been from the tips of the antennae to the tips of the outstretched back legs? It does look VERY young - possibly within the first few days or week of emerging? This genus, Neoxabea, are the only N. American tree crickets that are dark colored as nymphs. They often perch on surfaces with their abdomen tipped up and back -- unknown exactly why. (Seems to me to make them an easier pick-off target for wasps).

Do you know what type of plant/tree this was?

Not star anise
I looked more closely at the photo and though lots of it was around, this is a different plant. I'll try to figure it out, we collected lots of plant vouchers from this site.

Thanks for the ID
I think it was on Star Anise (Illiciaceae, Illicium floridanum) elevated about 5m on the bank of the West Pearl River. The habitat was bottomland hardwood, so there were also lots of huckleberries (Ericaceae), deciduous azaleas, Lauraceae of a few types, beech, oak, red maple.

I could be off on my size measurement, I do remember it being quite small.

1cm from tip to tip would make sense for a new nymph
The head & abdomen size on most tree cricket species is usually 3-4mm.
