mouthparts
Look again! Thrips are a little wierd. The asymmetrical mouthparts (the left mandible is larger than the frequently vestigial right) are often located towards the posterior of the head capsule, and in some species even extend over the anterior of the prosternum. Maybe I am fooling myself, but I think you can almost see the maxillary palps down there.

An absolutely amazing shot, by the way. You must have incredible patience and persistence to pull these off.

Mouthparts
That is strange. I had the feeling that these creatures were sort of like a true bug with some kind of hidden proboscis or something similar.

Thanks for carrying the ID further and image compliment. I was hopeful that I would find one of these which would stay still long enough to get some decent close ups of. I have previously taken many many images which were unsatisfactory because of constant movement.
