Helichus sp., family Dryopidae - Helichus lithophilus

Helichus sp., family Dryopidae - Helichus lithophilus
Nashua, Hillsborough County, New Hampshire, USA
August 4, 2005
Size: 4.5 - 5 mm
Came to UV lights. I noticed it about 11:30 PM. Looked immense compared to the Elm*id species I contributed here. Its legs were proportionally shorter and the antennae were *very* short, plus the pattern and coloration looked different -- no white around the eyes, no green and red legs. Still, it had that Elm*idae look to it, so that's what I thought it was till Andrew set me straight. This is a new family for this site.

I didn't go to collect or photograph but couldn't help myself;-) Specimens left with arthropod museum at PUCE, Quito, Ecuador.

Dryopidae...
These three photos are not elmids...they are actually in the Dryopidae...in the genus Helichus. They can most easily be seperated because the Dryopids have a very unusual club-like antennae--elmids are filiform. Also, there are are no really large elmids in the northeast.

Thank you Andrew.
That's a new family for this site. I've made the appropriate changes.
