Scarab Beetle - Geotrupes splendidus

Scarab Beetle - Geotrupes splendidus
Savannah, Andrew County, Missouri, USA
April 28, 2009
Size: 1/2 inch
This little Scarab Beetle was found on a morel mushroom in our timber. It appeared to have been eating the mushroom, a large chunk of the mushroom was missing and this beetle was tucked away inside the hole. It is a beautiful iridescent color. Beautiful greens and purple. I believe it could be a Rainbow Scarab, but wasn't for sure so I was reluctant to go ahead and place it there.

This looks to me like a Geotrupes splendidus, in the family Geotrupidae. The family is similar to the subfamily Scarabaeinae (rainbow scarabs and such), but unlike that subfamily, Geotrupids have a prominent scutellum.
