Monkey-Faced Bee

Monkey-Faced Bee
Las Cruces, Dona Ana County, New Mexico, USA
April 26, 2009
Size: body 1 "
We love the "face" on the back of this guy. It reminded us of the South Sea Island statues. Have tried to identify but haven't found a definitive match. It was seen on a sandy desert trail in the Mesilla Valley Bosque State Park near Las Cruces, NM.

that is the coolest thing
are we only allowed to reply to images if we are a scientist or "expert" that has a IDENTITY to contribute? I am new here, and I was trying to get the name on a little wasplike critter, so I thought I'd hit the images and compare try to identify myself until an "expert" has aided my request, then I saw this, and I must say, I WISH IT lived in my yard! It wasn't photoshopped or anything was it? It really had those markings naturally? I think it is awesome! Sorry I can't ID it, just a mommy and an artist, not a scientist.

Some kind of Sand Wasp?
It's really cute!
