Tom, there were two specimens of E. ruscarius and one E. californicus in same packet labeled #271368, #271367. Consequently, I cannot reliably determine the correspondence of photo-to-species in such combined cases where the two species are almost identical dorsally. They are distinguished by ventral punctures coarse in E. ruscarius vs fine in E. californicus.

I uploaded large pictures for all 3 beetles. I think the other 2 (271367 and 287168)look to have the same greenish color, while this one looks darker. So with the third beetle picture posted, and larger pictures do you think this could be called E. californicus, and the other 2 E. ruscarius?

Elaphrus ruscarius
based on matching the individual arrangements of elytral spots of each specimen in the batch which of course has nothing to do with actual taxonomic distinctions. Dorsal phototography and color generally cannot be used reliably to distinguish E. ruscarius from E. californicus.
