Removed from my dog
My vet just removed this from my dog. It started as an itchy, suspicious growing lump. Eventually it opened up and started draining. That is the heads up to tell it apart from a sebaceous cyst, tumor or abscess of some kind. Google it for an image. The breathing hole has a certain look - a single hole with a raised circular rim.

There are certainly
rabbit/rodent bot flies in Massachusetts. The larvae feed internally on living flesh, so you wouldn't see them "crunching away" at a dead rabbit, but you might find them emerging from a recently killed rabbit.
