Red Beetle with Black Spots - Subcoccinella vigintiquatuorpunctata

Red Beetle with Black Spots - Subcoccinella vigintiquatuorpunctata
Springfield, Calhoun County, Michigan, USA
May 2, 2009
Size: 4.5mm
This small beetle was found in my garden treading water in a bucket. This is the third insect that I have saved from drowning recently. Do they not know it's water they are landing on or are they trying to get a drink and fall in?

My first thought on what insect was ladybird beetle but I did not find a match here on BugGuide. What is it? Can you tell if male or female? Is it pooping in the last picture or what is the behavior?

Hmm,
Maybe a Carpet Beetle, family Dermestidae.
