Wood Borer- Ponderosa Pine.

Wood Borer- Ponderosa Pine.
Antelope Lake, Plumas County, California, USA
May 1, 2009
Size: 1.5" x .375" dia.
This came out of a Ponderosa Pine tree that had been through a fire and cut down approximately 2 years ago. This log had been sitting on a deck for two years that I know of. This bug bored a rather large cavity into the tree, about the size of a human thumb. I may just let this mature to see what comes out of the pupae.

Cerambycid pupa
This is a pupa of a long-horned beetle, and given that it is large and was found in a pine, I would guess a pine sawyer (Monochamus). There may be other options I'm unaware of though.

I think you called it right.
I think you called it right. Based on the info you provided I was able to research this little guy in some detail. It's a Japanese Pine Sawyer Beetle, one of the longhorn beetles we have around this area. Quite a handsome guy, even the adult.

Thank you for your help.

Follow up
Unfortunately, the pupa died and I wasn't able to see what it was for sure. However, a few weeks after we found this little guy one of my employees discovered a mature Japanese Sawyer Beetle in the same wood pile. He brought it to me. Interesting creature. It was extremely aggressive, biting anything that moved. I put it in a jar that had a couple of other beetles in it and it immediately killed them both. Even though this insect is fairly benign in the wild I decided it shouldn't be released, so I put it in a jar with a female Black Widow. The Widow won.
