Unknown beetle - Nemognatha piazata

Unknown beetle - Nemognatha piazata
Everglades National Park-Pine Land in Long Pine Key, Miami Dade County, Florida, USA
May 6, 2009
Size: maybe an inch
This bug was on a thistle flower. I did not see the tiny bug when I was photographing the beetle. The beetle started thrashing around which was behavior I had not seen before. When I downloaded my photos I could see the tiny bugs and they looked to me like they were attacking the beetle. Does anyone know what the tiny bugs are as well as the beetle? Were they indeed attacking?
