Not a Moth - Chauliodes

Not a Moth - Chauliodes
Egg Harbor Township, Atlantic County, New Jersey, USA
August 6, 2005
Size: 2 1/2 in.
Found two of these guys hanging on the wall outside my house, would really like to know what they are. Thanks

Chauliodes pectinicornis
Certainly not a moth. I'd say Chauliodes pectinicornis, the summer fishfly. Notice the egg, probably a tachinid fly egg, on top of the head.

Ocellus likely, not egg
Those have fooled me several times. These critters have prominent simple eyes (ocelli, singular, ocellus, I think!) on their head. They often shine in artificial light, such as a flash.
