Unknown metalic flying beetle(?), Alberta,Canada - Cicindela limbalis
Cochrane, Alberta, Canada
December 31, 1969
Size: Approx 1/12-1 inch long
Insect was found under a rock, very lethargic in the cold but eventually flew away, very quickly not clumsy at all(after warming)in the sun. Totally metalic green underneath, very ferocious looking up close. Only three found in a space about 1 foot wide, none found in the surrounding area anywhere.

Cicindela limbalis
This is Cicindela limbalis. Beautiful shot.

C. limbalis
Most tiger beetles are very good fliers some of the larger species like C. obsoleta or C. pulchra can fly a half- mile or more when disturbed. It was good that you photographed him while he was still inactive from the cold. Nice photo with the drops on moisture.

thanks for identifying my tiger beetle
I managed to get quite a few photo of them but really, I've been here in Cochrane Alberta many decades and never seen a tiger beatle before, you have a whole museum of them, wow how interesting. Like I said only saw total of three in the huge field of rock next to the river(40-50 acres?).I have an exceptional close up of their "face" at bug guide I'll post today. Again thanks and very interesting.I think I'll submit more photo in the future at BG.
