is that just "dirt" stuck around the base of the head (and other locations)? Reminds of a poor hair dye job a former NBA player used to sport.

Don't be dissin' the D-rod.

Ross's 1970 article says these beetles have pilosity on the back of the head. This is probably a mixture of that and dirt.
