Redbud Critter - Fascista cercerisella

Redbud Critter - Fascista cercerisella
DeSoto, Dallas County, Texas, USA
July 25, 2008
I'm wondering if this could be an early instar of a Redbud Leaffolder. It didn't actually "fold" leaves--rather, it made it's bed on one redbud leaf and completely covered itself with the edge of another--so the leaves were overlapping. Glued the leaves together with silk.

I found something like this too

It's interesting that yours has the beginnings of black markings. This makes me think that we're both right that we've found early-instar redbud leaffolders--evidently they start out pure green and gradually acquire black stripes. The behavior you observed is leaf-tying. It's certainly possible for individuals of the same species to vary as to whether they fold or tie leaves. The silk bands shown in your second image look identical to those made by the redbud leaffolder.

I think so too-
But my opinion doesn't carry much weight! However, I did notice that the U. of Florida internet reference at the bottom of the Redbud Leafroller Guide Page has a picture (first one) which shows both early and later instars, and the young ones look like your picture. By the way, how's the book coming?

Good eye!
Well, that image on the U-FL website is enough to convince me... it makes sense to me that intermediate instars would have incomplete black markings.

The publisher has accepted my manuscript, and it is now in the hands of a copyeditor. I'll get to see his suggested changes in a couple of weeks. As far as I know, it's still on track to be available early next year.
