Elegant Crab Spider - Xysticus elegans
Florence, Lauderdale County, Alabama, USA

The spider isn't dead- it bunched itself up after I pushed it around a little trying to get the photo.

How does one know?
Hi, Daniel-

My database lists almost 110 species of Xysticus, of which perhaps 80 are Nearctic species. How did you arrive at your determination (which I don't necessarily doubt)?

Identification
Hi Kevin, I browsed through the photos until I found a spider with the appearance and geography of this spider. I was basing it primarily on this photo: http://bugguide.net/node/view/2109/bgimage. Feel free to move it. Thanks again for your help.
