Patent leather beetle? - Prionus imbricornis

Patent leather beetle? - Prionus imbricornis
Richmond, Chesterfield County, Virginia, USA
August 8, 2005
Size: 2 inches long
This enormous beetle was resting on the carport wall late at night, and barely moved even when I prodded him in an attempt to get a better face shot. It doesn't appear to have the strong ridges of a patent leather beetle, though.

Tile-horned Prionus
I don't think patent-leather beetles have such long and elaborate antennae. This is more likely a Tile-horned Prionus in the longhorned beetle family. See the Guide page here. Nice pictures!

Thanks, Joe
Thanks, Joe -- your id looks right to me. The guide also says these big critters like porchlights, and I got no such suggestion about patent leather beetles.
