My first guess is
March Flies (Bibionidae). One of the experts should be along shortly to give you more info. :) Welcome to The Guide, by the way.

A little late, aren't they?
Thank you, Kevin, both for the info and the welcome.

Looks like I'll be using Bug Guide a lot as I learn. Being the rankest of amatuers, I do try to use field guides but find myself befuddled most of the time - too many choices, too little knowledge!

Regards,

Carol

Get in line behind me, Carol
as for being the "rankest" of amateurs. (I hope we're talking place in line and not bad smells!) I've been using BugGuide for a year or two now, and it has REALLY given me an education (but I still feel like a total beginner sometimes). In any case, that's the beauty of this group: we've got some world class PhDs (seriously), some very knowledgeable folks, and amateurs like you and me, and we all get to hobnob together!! :)
