Eumenid - Dolichodynerus tanynotus

Eumenid - Dolichodynerus tanynotus
Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, San Diego County, California, USA
April 23, 2009
Size: BL about 12 mm
This quite handsome wasp seems somewhat different from Euodynerus, another tri-colored Eumenid. We saw it visiting Goldenhead (Acamptopappus sphaerocephalus - Asteraceae) at Vallecito Ranch in The Park. I am submitting four images. They may be of one or of two different individuals.

Dolichodynerus tanynotus (CA)
Moved from Potter and Mason Wasps. A very distinctive genus with only three species in the U.S. (restricted to the southwest). Tanynotus is the only one of the three that has red markings. Excellent find!

Thank you so very much for identifying this striking eumenid. I am delighted to know its name and learn about it.
