Grey Caterpillar with purplish belly-Millsap,TX
My kids found one of these inching down a post oak tree in our front yard. Anybody know what it is and if it stings? When my kids put it in a jar with a stick it jerked around like it was trying to sting them.

Catocala ilia or Ilia Underwing Moth
Apparantly this is the Catocala ilia caterpillar or (Ilia underwing moth)
There is an image I found today at:
http://homepage.mac.com/eceisner/Insects/Moths/mothpage3.html

Scroll down half the page and you will see pictures of the moth itself as well as the caterpillar. I am very fascinated by this, as is my family. We have a couple old oaks on our land and this is where the specimen we found fell from. I'm excited about going out to find them around the trees now that I know what they are. Although those caterpillars do seem so aggressive the little boogers.
