Drone Honey Bee in California - Apis mellifera - male

Drone Honey Bee in California - Apis mellifera - Male
Webb Canyon, ~2000 ft. altitude, Los Angeles County, California, USA
May 10, 2009
Size: ~16 mm
I am almost positive that this wonderfully large bee which I rescued from the pool is a drone Honey Bee. I'm basing this on other images in the guide (1, 2), as well as reading I have done which details the greatly increased size of the eyes as well as the overall larger and more heavy-bodied appearance of the body. I probably should have spent more time getting some better shots, but I figured this individual was an important member of the local bee community and I didn't want to stress it any more than its time in the pool had already. I left it in some vegetation to dry off and when I checked back later it had apparently recouped enough to fly away.

Could someone please confirm that this is indeed a drone? Thanks!

Very good!
Thanks, Martin. I'm very happy to have been able to document (and rescue) one of the lesser seen members of the hive.
