Mosquito - 5-20-09 - Psorophora ferox

Mosquito - 5-20-09 - Psorophora ferox
Cass County, Texas, USA
May 20, 2009
Size: 1/4"
This was a rather large and chunky mosquito. It also appears to be full of blood, lol. Not sure of a species but it had a peculiar habit of raising the middle set of legs and curling them forward in this unusual manner.

Psorophora ferox
Another ferox and another nice shot.

Cool shot
I hope you get an ID.

I did some more research
and although there are some differences, my mosquito is similar in a lot of ways to a Salt Marsh Mosquito. BTW, I have since seen several more of them.

Same here.
Most mosquitoes are plain janes, but this is one fancy mosquito.

When I was little, I caught a similar (or was it the same?) looking mosquito. It was huge and robust, and in his jar was some other insect (don't remember but it was bigger than the mosquito) and all of a sudden, the mosquito mounted on the insect and started suck its blood! Really freaky stuff because I didn't know there was a mosquito that could feed on invertebrate blood.
