One for Dr. Shelley - Sigmoria
Congaree Swamp National Park, Gadsen, Richland County, South Carolina, USA

Size: nearly 40 mm
We rolled over a log and found this striking millipede.

There are several possible species for this milliped, all in the genus Sigmoria (order Polydesmida: family Xystodesmidae). Impossible to determine from a dorsal view like this; need a close up of the male gonopods on the ventral surface, which replace the first pair of legs on segment 7, but can't tell sex for sure. To my knowledge, no milliped of this type is known from Congaree Swamp Nat. Pk., so if it could be identified, this would be a nice record. Where exactly in the park was it found? Also, it's Richland Co. rather than Richmond Co., I believe (there's a Richmond Co. in NC and of the course, the city of Richmond in VA). Rowland Shelley

Good catch on the county, thanks.
Mis-communication between the map reader and the typist! The after-hours parking and campground is just north of the gate and just south of Old Bluff Road. We were walking from the campground toward the Visitor Center, but hadn't gotten as far as the bluff trail. We had rolled over a log just to the right (west) of the trail when we saw this beauty.
