Small fly with big red eyes

Small fly with big red eyes
Honey Island Swamp, St. Tammany Parish, Louisiana, USA
May 22, 2009
Size: 2.1 mm to abdomen tip
This fly was hopping around like a wild animal, so it was hard to get a closer shot than this.

Moved from Flies.

Hey, it is a wild animal.
My best guess is hairy maggot blowfly, Chrysomya megacephala.

If I'm correct as to species, it's a male. They have the bigger eyes.

the blowfly is, like, 3 times the size of this one...

Ahhh, you're right, =v=
Would you believe a pygmy blowfly? Bad sizing on my part? An outright gaffe?

well...
...i expect LA, of all places, to be way better w/metric than the rest of the country -- so maybe dismissing all the blowfly measurements as unreliable is probably a good idea.

I collected the fly
I'll post a more precise (non-guess) measurement shortly.

I am a great guesser
It is 2.1 mm from the front of the eyes to the tip of the abdomen.

nice!
thanks -- precise size data always helps
