Narrow-winged Tree Cricket - Oecanthus niveus - male

Narrow-winged Tree Cricket - Oecanthus niveus - Male
Randolph, Norfolk County, Massachusetts, USA
August 10, 2005

Moved
Moved from Snowy Tree Cricket. See my comment below.

Found a misidentification I made in 2008
Sorry, I had just started ID'ing tree crickets when I called this Oecanthus fultoni. He is indeed a bit confusing given:
1. the orange seems concentrated only at the top of the head (doesn't extend down into the pronotum as it generally does with O. niveus)
2. the black marks on the segments at the base of the antennae appear to be round on the left side (as in O. fultoni); but I now see that on the right side, there appears to be a hint of a 'j' on the right side.

What caught my eye today, however, is the width of the tegmina. They are too narrow to be O. fultoni.

This is a male Narrow-winged tree cricket.

Glad this one didn't end up in your book with my misidentification!

It's a small picture and hard to see the detail. Thanks for catching it.

Moved
Moved from Oecanthus. Moved this to Snowy Tree Cricket based on: Pale overall color, pale limbs, orange on vertex of head, pale antennae, equally sized black spots on pedicle and scape at base of antennae, and a hint of a milky white field around the black spots.

Thanks
You're doing a great job identifying all these tree crickets.

Thanks, Tom
I'm proceeding cautiously. There's so much to learn....and I'm still VERY busy trying to study and photograph live Oecanthinae.
