This is a male Lepidanthrax. Note the shiny scales on the abdomen.

Thanks once again, particularly for the gender ID and reference to shiny scales. I saw several glittery bugs flying at the bottom of buckwheat and assumed - apparently correctly - they were bee flies. Bet this is them. Will try harder to shoot them next time.
