Hover Flies - Toxomerus marginatus - male - female

Hover Flies - Toxomerus marginatus - Male Female
Ackworth, Warren County, Iowa, USA
May 24, 2009
Size: ~6 mm
Mating on goldenrod leaf in grassy old field. Syrphids?

Moved

Yes, syrphids
Wing venation verifies that. These are Toxomerus geminatus.

Must be a slip of the keyboard, Ron -
Check it out, this is T. marginatus, with the margin of the abdomen narrowly, but continuously yellow. T. geminatus's abdominal margin is alternately black and yellow, aside from other differences; see here: Toxomerus, as well as Martin Hauser's pictorial key.

Oops. Hartmut's right, of course.
I should know better. I do! Thanks, Hartmut, for keeping me honest. Well, retroactively.

Thanks for the update
Thanks for both of you for the update. FYI, the reidentification to T. marginatus means that my photo is not the first of this species posted on BG for Iowa after all. Still a neat find for me, thanks again!

Thanks, Ron!
All the way to species, great! This becomes its first BG data point for Iowa.

Congrats!
Keep after those syrphids, John.

What an interesting group!
So colorful, so distinctive, so diverse!
