Familiar Bluet - Enallagma civile

Familiar Bluet - Enallagma civile
Stafford, Stafford County, Virginia, USA
August 10, 2005
Found in my front yard in the afternoon. When I spotted it, I thought its color was all lavender and thought it was a Variable Dancer. Changed my mind when I viewed the image. Any chance it may be a young male - Enallagma civile. Lost another opportunity to get a clear image. My other hand was holding the dog on leash. :) The next street down I saw a blue damselfly but could not get close enough to see which one it was.

Looks Familiar
Joanne, I think you're right. This one looks just like Familiar Bluet, Enallagma civile. Ed Lam cautions that Hagen's, Atlantic, and Marsh are very similar. Familiar is much more common, though, and looking at the range maps in Lam I see there is no record for any of these other three species from your part of Virginia. On the other hand, it is not out of the question about Stafford County having Hagen's, Marsh, or Atlantic.

Darn, and here I thought I was going to get a break not having to ID the other three. :) It would be neat if I did find one of them. Thanks, Stephen.
