Yellow Striped Leafhopper in California - Pagaronia tredecimpunctata

Size: 7 - 8 mm

The sun had almost gone down, and this wonderful leafhopper was my last pool-rescue for the day. Aside from a foot which it must have lost due to some other misfortune, it seemed to be in pretty good shape. Despite its distinctive pattern, I was not able to match this to any of the images I have looked at thus far. I would love to have an ID and appreciate any help I can get!

Mixed oak & chaparral habitat.

Pagaronia furcata

The 3 dark spots on the thorax distinguish this species from P.tredecimpunctata (we don't have a photo of that common species yet - watch for it!).

I will most certainly keep my eyes open for the other look-alike species and I have added your helpful comment to the Info page.

I located the original description of P. furcata and am now wondering if this specimen can be identified as a female due to the lack of any orange coloration. I have referenced the pertinent text on the Info page for this species under the Identification section. If you have a moment, perhaps you could take a look and give me your opinion regarding the gender?
