I think fire ants, but alates - Lasius
Prospect Hill, Caswell County, North Carolina, USA
May 26, 2009
Size: 5mm
I've never seen them with wings, so I wasn't positive they were fire ants.

Moved
Moved from Ants.

These are Citronella Ants (Lasius sp, subgenus Acanthomyops)
Both yellow, wingless workers and reddish, winged young queens can be seen at this "swarming" colony. Maybe L. interjectus.

sweet
thanks!
