Tiny painted beetle - Chlorochroa

Tiny painted beetle - Chlorochroa
Rio Rancho, Sandoval County, New Mexico, USA
May 26, 2009
Size: 1/4" at its' widest spot
This tiny beetle-bug is truly beautiful. The front and head are black and the back half of the shield-like back is a mottled teal blue. The shield is outlined in shades of neon orange and there are bright white spots in the same place on each bug. No visible mandibles or pincers. Hundreds can be seen mid-day on the sunny stucco walls of the house and courtyard. Quite shy, it runs quickly when approached.

Looks like -
a stink bug (family Pentatomidae - not a beetle). Check out our images of Chlorochroa, for example, while you wait for an expert to comment.

Thanks for the quick response
By jove, I think you've got it! An answer in less than an hour, too. Thanks for the identification. Are these lovely new friends going to devastate my flowers? Do we get the future fun of being encased in a pungent stinky aroma some otherwise peaceful summer night? If you can point me in the direction of where to learn more about the characteristics of chlorochora I'd appreciate it.

Ahh -
a very reasonable and natural question, but you've reached the limits of my shallow knowledge of this bug type. Although I know they can be pests of crops and are usually plant feeders, I don't know whether they are likely to harm your garden. Hopefully an expert will comment here, or you can try your local agricultural extension office with these questions, now that you have know the family ID?
