Moth - Haploa

Moth - Haploa
Fairfield, IL, Wayne County, Illinois, USA
May 26, 2009
This moth hatched today. Reminds me of a Haploa or Cycnia but I can't find a match either here or on MPG. The body was light orange for a short segment on the dorsum and then white. Hind wing is white.

Haploa spp.
I received the following from Chris Schmidt, leading specialist in Arctiidae (to whom I had sent the photos): "Most if not all Haploa species express this unmarked form, and there really is no reliable way to determine which this one is - however one can usually get a "most likely" by associating them with marked forms that occur at the same time/habitat." I guess we'll have to place this note on all the Haploa species pages at MPG and here at BugGuide.

Bummer
Guess my delusions of grandeur will have to be postponed to another day. Thanks for the leg work.

Well, Steve, it's the Best-marked Unmarked Form....
....that I've seen. The thin brown edging along the costa is pretty neat.

Yes, this is a Haploa. On MP
Yes, this is a Haploa. On MPG there is an all white H. colona, a few other species are also known to do this, and telling them apart when they are all white is impossible basically. Very nice! Not a common find.

Thanks, Bob
I found H. reversa in a neighboring field 2 years ago in both the typical form and an all white form. H. clymene has also been documented in this patch of woods but I don't think it's in the running.
