Size: ~35 cm
This wasp was visiting fallen, rotting logs and pressing her upturned abdomen on the wood, although it didn't appear she was piecing it in any way. I have no idea what this is.

Wow. I certainly didn't consider that...I agree that this appears to be a female Ctenophora dorsalis.

don't know what it is more specifically -- love it anyway

is what I was thinking too... what about something like

(I googled "wood-boring tipulid," and that's what came up. Maybe not a perfect match, but on the right track...?)
