Mosquito - 5-16 09 - Psorophora ferox - female

Mosquito - 5-16 09 - Psorophora ferox - Female
Cass County, Texas, USA
Size: 1/4"
I posted a photo recently of the same species but it was a very poor image. This is another individual of the same species and hopefully a better image. This mosquito is full of blood as was the last one. I do see many more that are much slimmer because they had not fed recently.

I found some Salt Marsh Mosquitoes that have the common trait of lifting the middle pair of legs in this manner.

There is a pond very close by.

Ferox
Looks like you have Psorophora ferox. You can tell because of the pointed abdomen, white markings on the apical side of each abdominal segment and the white "feet". The larva develop in temporary rain pools. Nice shot!

I was reviewing some Psorophora images, and I believe this is in fact Psorophora mexicana. I say this because it appears that only hindtarsomere 5 is pale scales, whereas in ferox, 4 and 5 and perhaps 3 would be pale scaled. This would probably represent a county record for this species.

Upon reviewing some literature, it seems that it is possible, though not likely that this is Ps. mexicana. Do you by chance have any other photos of this specimen?

Unfortunately,
I do not have any other pics of this specimen. I do have images of another individual that was taken about 4 days later in the same area and although I realize there is no direct connection between the two, they both appeared identical to my untrained eye.

If you don't mind, perhaps you could upload those as well. It would be interesting to compare. If you have shots showing the top of the thorax that would be most informative.
