Eristalis ( tenax?) - Eristalis - male

Eristalis ( tenax?) - Eristalis - Male
Mount Pinos summit, elev.8,831ft (2692m), Western Transverse Ranges, Kern County, California, USA
August 12, 2005
Wing venation is certainly Eristalis, and it looks like images I've seen of E. tenax, but I'd like someone to confirm or correct this ID.

More like E. arbustorum
Hello Hartmut,
And indeed it is a male! For correct ID I should be able to look at it's face, because in E. arbustorum the face is completely white, whereas other Eristalis species have always a black stripe from mouth rim to antennae.
The form of the animal and the color of it's abdomen almost certainly point out to E. arbustorum. There are already some other pictures in the guide to compare with yours.
Greetings,
Gerard Pennards

Eristalis arbustorum
Thanks Gerard,
your comment prompted me to post images of a different specimen, also taken on Mt. Pinos summit. Take a look at #2851, 2852, 2853. If the face is sufficiently white (I looked at other photos of E. arbustorum, and the 'white' must refer to the white bristles covering most of the face) then it must be E. arbustorum.
