Great Purple Hairstreak - Atlides halesus - male

Great Purple Hairstreak - Atlides halesus - Male
Yucca Valley, San Bernardino County, California, USA
July 14, 2008
In a desert willow tree.

Quite spectacular in flight -
Last spring I tried to follow a female of this sp. in the Clark Valley area, Anza Borrego Desert State Park, in San Diego County. Your photo shows a male (note the iridescent blue streak on FW underside). At least in terms of distribution this would be A. h. corcorani Clench, 1942 (see Pelham, 2008; (1)).
According to Pyle ((2)), this form has only one tail in the male, and no red bar at the outer angle of the VHW. See also Butterflies of America, Mariposas Mexicanas, and Southern California Butterflies.

Moved
Moved from Butterflies (excluding skippers).

David Ferguson confirmed the ID via personal correspondence.

I'm fairly certain that this is...
...a Great Purple Hairstreak (Atlides halesus).

A pretty beat-up specimen, but seemingly the first submission of this species from California. Nice to see!

Thank you! It was pretty beat
