Young Vespula nest
A few species build tan nests, but I would say this is most likely to be from Vespula vulgaris based on location

Great images

thanks
Is there a book or reference that shows different types of wasp/bee/hornet nests?

We have various examples on the guide
Here is a typical young underground nest like the one you found

A young bald faced hornet nest

and an aerial yellowjacket nest
