Melanoplus viridipes group
It is a member of this group or "superspecies".
Melanoplus
viridipes has been split up into a number of segregate "species", most with complimentary distributions (which makes me think they are subspecies and not real species), but some have overlapping little ranges in the Appalachians and probably are different things. For now, no attempt has been made to segregate these on BugGuide (if it is even possible), and they are all included under the name
M. viridipes
.
This one should belong to subspecies (or species)
eurycercus
.

looks like a Melanoplus to me
This might be a good place to look for a match -
Genus Melanoplus
I'm not sure if other genus have this general appearance though.

Could be M. viridipes
It looks a lot like
Melanoplus viridipes
except the black color on our existing pictures is brown on mine.
