Size: 1 half inch Fat
Pretty fat fly, looks a bit like a bumble bee. I caught him on my back porch so I really don’t know what is habitat is or characteristics. Hearty large fat fly.

It looks like a Tachinid to me

Do you think it may be a Tachinid fly - Belvosia bifasciata ?
after looking through the tachinid, I found some pictures here at bugguide that look similar

Hope you get an expert ID on this one. If you still have the prisoner, a shot down from above showing wing veins may be helpful.

This is definitely Belvosia sp.

 
And it's a first for Tennessee.
