Recently eclosed Mourning Cloak - Nymphalis antiopa

Recently eclosed Mourning Cloak - Nymphalis antiopa
Pickens County, Georgia, USA
May 27, 2009
About three hours after emerging from its chrysalis.

I had anticipated that, when it started opening and closing its wings, that it would stay in the same spot for at least a few minutes,
during which time I would take a lot of great photos while it posed for me graciously.

This did not happen. After I first noticed it opening and closing its wings, it flew off within seconds, fortunately landing in a sweetgum
next to the porch, allowing me to get a few shots.

After about ten minutes at this spot, it flew up into another maple tree about 20-25 feet up,
where it remained for perhaps another hour before flying off.
