There were 5 of these on the ground at the base of a rotting tree and 2 empty ones sticking out of tree.

I found an empty one of these at the side of the road beneath an oak tree. I also don't know what it is. Neither does my sister who is a wildlife biologist. They can't be common as I've lived here 36 yrs. and have never seen one before.
