Euphoria fulgida

Euphoria fulgida
Waterford, New London County, Connecticut, USA
July 24, 2005
Size: 3/4 in
My first reaction when I saw this was that it was a green june bettle. A closer look revealed that theres differences in the pronotum and elytra markings. Anybody have any idea what this is? I appreciate the help.

Variability in E. fulgida
I just looked at this image from North Carolina:

It has more spots on the elytra, though not as many as yours.

Interesting
I guess the locations prove that the spots dont have much to do with locale, it must be just inter-individual variability like you said. Thanks for the update.

Happy to see a Euphoria
This is another scarab, Euphoria fulgida. It is very similar to Cotinis, the Green June Beetle, but in that species the scutellum (little triangular plate at the middle front of the elytra) is covered by part of the pronotum.

Compare Euphoria fulgida and Cotinis nitida:

Thanks a lot. Now I know the Euphoria down in Florida are highly variable in markings. Is this species variable as well and why this specimen has the white speckles on the elytra that the otherrs lack? or is it indicative of sex or locale or something else? Just trying to brush up on my field marks and dont wanna leave anything out...

Variability in Euphoria
Yes, intersting. The two E. fulgida I've seen have had no white flecks, while yours has some. They must be somewhat variable, but I don't know if that is a regional difference or just inter-individual variability.
