Crane fly with Mites (detail) - Tipula borealis

Crane fly with Mites (detail) - Tipula borealis
Hampshire County, Massachusetts, USA
July 28, 2005
Size: mites: ~1 mm
Chen Young identified this Crane fly as Tipula (Beringotipula) and probably species of borealis.

He also notes:
"As for the mites, they are not just taking a ride, they are actually sucking body juice out of the crane fly. They are general feeders and are not species specific. They have been recorded in many different groups of insects, especially large beetles."

Bloated Mites
Those are some fat well-fed mites!

Chen, is it possible the mites can drain enough from the female to adversely affect her ability to lay viable eggs? I've seen Lynette's photos of mites hitchhiking on Sexton beetles but not on crane flies before - though I can't say I've searched looking for them.
